1. Take the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore

St. Marys is the “Gateway to Cumberland Island,” meaning that access to Cumberland’s unbelievable nature and history begins at St. Marys, where the ferry departs.

2. Visit Oak Grove Cemetery

One of the oldest cemeteries in Coastal Georgia, this scenic cemetery dating to 1799 is dotted with azalea and camellia bushes and houses graves of Revolutionary War veterans, plague victims, murder victims, and more! Find a guide to the cemetery at the St. Marys Visitor Center.

3. Stroll Howard Gilman Park

This picturesque riverfront park boasts a pier, boat dock, and kayak launch in addition to a babbling fountain and benches where you may rest to witness a spectacular sunset over the St. Marys River.

4. Visit the Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum

Here you may gain more in-depth knowledge on nearby Cumberland Island and Southeast Georgia in general, from the Timucua Native Americans to steel tycoon Carnegies and beyond. A War of 1812 exhibit highlights an important local battle culminating in the British occupation of the town in 1815.

5. Stop in the St. Marys Submarine Museum

Learn about St. Marys’ Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay and naval history by viewing the museum’s wide array of pictures, paintings, models, artifacts and rare historical documents. You can even operate a real submarine Type 2 periscope!

St. Marys is known as an antiques mecca with such shops as such as Lucy Gunn or Cottle and Gunn. Don’t miss out on the fun on your visit!

8. Eat!

You must try succulent Georgia shrimp (especially the local specialty, rock shrimp, when it is season) at such establishments as Seagles Restaurant and Locals Dockside.
