Student Adventures: Cumberland Island and St. Marys Field Trips

Cumberland Island and St. Marys are bursting with Native American, Colonial, and Gilded Age history and are incredibly rewarding visits for students. We can cater tour itineraries to whichever subjects your class is studying!

Two-Hour Cumberland Island Walking Tour

This tour covers the history of the Dungeness Historic Area, from the Native Americans to European explorers and Americans such as Catherine Greene, wife of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, and the Carnegies, famous steel magnates. We explore the Carnegies’ haunting Dungeness ruins, a 200-year-old cemetery where historic figures such as Light Horse Harry Lee are buried, Carnegie servants’ buildings such as the beautifully-preserved laundry, salt marshes, and more.

Duration: 2:00

Price: $15 per student

All-Day Cumberland Island Walking Tour

This tour includes the previously-mentioned history and ecology of the island plus a hike through a maritime forest, games that the Carnegies would have played, and seining at Cumberland’s pristine white sand beach. On this tour, students truly immerse themselves in the history and nature of this fascinating island.

Duration: About 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Price: $20 per student

           $30 per chaperone  

(minimum $450)  

Note: Depending on your group size and schedule, a privately-chartered ferry is most likely required. We are happy to help you with these logistics.

St. Marys Walking Tour

On this walking tour, students divide into teams to solve riddles concerning landmarks and buildings in downtown St. Marys, such as the First Presbyterian Church, the second-oldest church in Georgia. We also gain exclusive access to buildings such as the Riverview Hotel, where such names as Carnegie and Rockefeller stayed. Afterwards, the team that solves the most riddles gets a prize!
