Entering Canada by Car: The Process For Americans

Published by Molly Silver on

Canada is now open to Americans! As of August 9, 2021, vaccinated U.S. citizens are allowed to visit our neighbors to the North. While it is exciting that Americans’ horizons are literally expanding as we are welcomed to more countries, it can be tedious to find accurate information on the requirements needed to enter. As someone who just crossed the Canadian border, I am here to make your life easier. Below find the requirements for entering Canada by car.

When you arrive at the Canadian border, you must present 4 things:

1. Proof of vaccination

  • Make sure you have that easy-to-lose, tiny piece of paper with you!

2. Pre-entry Covid test results

  • You must take the PCR test, not a rapid results test.
  • Take the test within 72 hours before your arrival to Canada.
  • The proof of this test may be either on paper or electronic.

3. ArrivaCAN receipt

  • Enter the details and upload proof of your Covid-19 vaccines within 72 hours before your arrival to Canada.
  • Upload your passport information.
  • Enter your Canadian port of entry and back-up quarantine location in Canada, in case you test positive on a random Covid test that border agents may administer.
  • Complete your submission and get an ArriveCAN receipt.
  • Show your receipt to the border services officer upon entry.

4. Other travel documents, i.e. passport

The Canadian border agent we encountered at the customs office was very friendly and helpful and made the process easy.

While these steps take a bit of pre-planning, they are simple and relatively hassle-free. Besides, this small effort will result in big rewards! Don’t you think these views are worth it?
