When you hear the Carnegie name, mega wealth and opulence may come to mind, but do you really know the splendor in which this Gilded-Aged family lived?
Find out on this private Cumberland Island walking tour of the Dungeness Mansion area!

Thomas Carnegie, the brother of steel magnate Andrew, and his formidable wife, Lucy, fell in love with Cumberland, built their mansion there, and eventually controlled 90 percent of the island, which they molded to their will.

On this tour, focus on their handiwork in the Dungeness area, the site of Andrew’s and Lucy’s massive home and the heartbeat of the Carnegies’ Cumberland holdings. We will discuss:

  • The luxury in which they lived at the mansion
  • The lavish parties they threw at their nearby Recreation House
  • The entertainment they organized on the wide lawn

However, we will also explore lesser-known sites with stories that are just as fascinating. The ruins of the powerhouse, the home of the head housekeeper, the Carriage House, and beloved pets’ headstones (to name just a few) boast tales of an illicit elopement, a hopelessly alcoholic Carnegie grandson, the acts of a faithful servant, and much more.

Discover stories of scandal, heartbreak, hope, and resilience, all tucked within this one tiny corner of Cumberland Island and set against the unforgettable backdrop of the Dungeness mansion!
