A Naturalist’s Cumberland Island: 2-Hour Private Tour
This tour offers a perfect snapshot of the island’s ecology for those with limited time or energy.
Available beginning in September!

While Cumberland Island’s history is fascinating, its nature is the real star of the show!
From white-sand beaches to neon-green marshes, magnificent live oak forests to a serene river, this island has so much magic to reveal. Set against the backdrop of the Carnegies’ evocative Dungeness Mansion ruins, these scenes are sure to capture your imagination!
Delve deeper into Cumberland’s surprisingly diverse habitats, native species, and famous non-native feral horses with a personalized, private tour led by an expert guide.
Explore these picturesque sites:
- Take in the island’s pristine marsh and discover the water birds (and maybe even an alligator!) who call it home.
- If the tide permits, visit Raccoon Key for some of the best shark tooth hunting on the Georgia Coast. Meanwhile, discover why this area is a tooth hunter’s treasure trove.
- Enjoy the shade of the maritime forest while gazing in awe at the twisted branches of its centuries-old live oaks. Learn about the commercial importance these trees played 200 years ago and Cumberland’s role in that industry.
- If time and energy levels permit, head to the 17-mile-long white-sand beach, one of the longest stretches of undeveloped beach on the East Coast, to discuss its unique ecology and VIP visitors: sea turtles.
Along the way, discover unassuming yet fascinating details, such as bubblegum-pink lichen or yaupon holly, the leaves of which the local Native Americans brewed into a healthful tea.
On this intimate tour, let the flora and fauna of this island reveal their quiet magic in layer after captivating layer!
